Millenials vs. Generation Z - in social media world. Theoretical post.

Millenials vs. Gen Z – in social media world.

The youngest generations of our times are the biggest users of social media. It is not hard to imagine, if they are literally connected to technology their whole life. In this post I would like to take a deeper look on two generations – Millenials and Generation Z. First of all, we should characterize these generations.

THE ME, ME, ME GENERATION

Millenials, for which we have plenty others names like Generation Y, Echo Boomers, C Generation, Why Generation, Net Generation, Gen Wired, DotNet, Ne(x)t Generation, Nexters, First Globals, iPod Generation, and iYGeneration,  were born between beginning of 80s’ and half of 90s’. Different articles show various age ranges – for beginning from 1977 to 1984 and for the end of generation from 1994 till even 2000.
They are children of the original Baby Boomers.

They were born into a technological, electronic, and wireless society with global boundaries becoming more transparent. Millennials were born and raised in a technologically advanced era, drastically different than those of previous generations. Because of it their character is also totally unlike  other generations.

Millenials are really diverse generation, but let’s set basics. GenY are multitasking, tech savvy and optimistic. They want do things differently than their parents, so mostly they don’t follow the rules, but they rewrite them. Also they like to  celebrate diversity, think about their friends as a family and explore the world. They are service-oriented and they’re more “Me” Generation than Gen Z. Sometimes they’re considered as too confident, narcists and with sense of entitlement,  People from Generation Y are more concentrated on present moment than on future. Because of it they’re not always looking for stable job. They’re called “Peter Pan” Generation also, because theiy members often delaying some rites of passage into adulthood. They live longer with their parents and become independent later than previous generations. Millennials, disturbingly, are not reading literature or newspapers as much as previous generations of the same age. A Millennial will be playing a game more often than reading a book.

As the generation born in new era, they assume technology. Early part of GenY was raised when the Internet in some countries (as Poland for example) was just introduced and they still can remember computers with big backs, when sometimes the only thing that you could do on them is playing games.  But the fact is that Millennials clearly adapt faster to computer and internet services because they have almost always had them, and if not, they were introduced to the digital world in really young age. Millennials have spent thousands of hours playing electronic, computer and video games. They love the constant interactivity, full motion multimedia, colorful graphics. For them really important is the ability to learn and progress to higher levels, and the ability to collaborate with friends in their learning and competitions
If they want to learn something, they google it. Millenials would like to have provided every service digitally and have a choice to decide how much they will use the face to face versus the online.

Millennials use a variety of social networks for news and information, especially Facebook. This social media platform is nowadays the most used one by GenY. Technology has been part of their daily life from their reliance on Facebook, cell phones, and texting - to watching and/or creating their own YouTube videos, blogging on the Internet, or Skyping with others throughout the Globe. These types of communication allow Generation Y to be connected 24/7 to friends, family, faculty, and business sites in ways which previous generations could not have imagined.  Millenials use various social media and just right after Facebook we have Twitter. This generation is concentrated on text much more than GenZ.

DIGITAL IN THEIR DNA

Generation Z, known also as Digital Navies,  Tweens, Baby Bloomers, Generation 9/11, and Generation XD)  was born from mid 90s’  till.... We don’t know exactly where to put the ending line, because nobody described yet next generation after Tweens.  This was the decade following the widespread emergence of World Wide Web and use of electronic gadgets and digital technologies like the Internet and social media. Their parents are Late Generation X or Early Millenials.

They are eco-conscious to the maximum. They may want more stability employment than Millenials. Gen Z is more diverse than any other generation, not only becaue of nationality and race, but also because of gender.  They are Tech Innate, they can pay attention for 5 screens at same time. They’re active volunteers, who thinks more about “togetherness” than normal tolerance. The best way to communicate with them is by images. They are known as people ho “make stuff”. They are future focused and want to work for success. Moreover they are collective conscious.

Millenials are more tolerant, respectful, and responsible. They are social change-oriented  and more socially aware and community minded. People from GenY are more cautious, but not afraid to try new things. They aren’t afraid to embrace diversity. Unfortunately they have a short attention span. Also because they need instant answers, they struggle with critically evaluating information and are quick to take the first information they get including opinions over fact pieces.  Sometimes GenZ can demonstrate a lack of manners.

The connection of Generation Z and technology is excellent described by Wharton School of Business in 2015:

“Generation Z are like millennials on steroids. They are millennials amplified. The minute they were born, they already had a domain name and a Facebook profile and Twitter feed. Social media is second nature to them. Even members of Gen Z who don’t necessarily think they’re tech savvy absolutely are. Technology is as an extension of their self-expression.”
Gen Z have never been without not even computers or Internet, but social media. Spend more time in front of TV’s, computers, video games and tend to remain indoors connecting with others digitally. Generation Z is the most social-media savvy generation today and they are constantly connected to their broader community through a variety of social media channels. Gen Z, like Millennials, are likely to waste more time than their older generations (much of this time being spent on social media).

GenZers report spending almost every waking hour online  Prefer frequent communication in spurts rather than lengthy communication. They are emoji-driven and rise in self-publishing tools (Tumblr, Twitter, Blogger, etc.). Tweens are not really using email.  They have a Facebook page to stay connected but think too much drama happens on it. Facebook leads the pack by being the foundation for communication with anyone – from new to long-time friends, to family spread far and wide, as well as for favorite brands. The platform keeps on top of technology trends, from messaging to video, and that’s helped solidify its position as this generation’s default social platform.

What they are not doing? For sure they are not sending messages through social media sites, not really using Twitter and not really using blogs. They have their smartphones and use it for everything - TV, GPS, Internet, learning, getting informations, etc.  If they want to learn something, they find it on Youtube. Because of their short attention span, they are focusing more on pictures, photos and videos than long text. Snapchat and Instagram are leading platforms for Gen Z when it comes to maintaining more immediate and closer relationships. They use also Youtube for videos and vlogs, Tumblr, Pinterest and  some new social media as Musically, where we can find a lot of representatives of GenZ.

They are accustomed to high-tech and multiple information sources, with messages bombarding them from all sides. They have never lived without the Internet. They believe that they can impact the world and can visualize changing places with someone else and can project possible behaviors. Today’s Tweens represent the first generation to practice adolescent independence on the Internet, that is, Tweens do not need parents or teachers to help them gather information. Generation Z is influenced by new media, virtual friends, and the power that comes with technology.

WHY GENERATION VS. GENERATION XD

GenZ is really similar to previous generation, but it looks like their developed on their mistakes, making their own ones. When Millenials are  tech savvy, concentrated on 2 screens, Generation Z is tech innate with 5 screens (mobile, tablet, desktop, TV and music device). Multi-culturalism of GenY developed in race and gender blended new generation of Tweens. Their connection with technology is different, because Millenials grew up with computers, mostly stationery one’s and GenZ grew up with touch screens. Tweens are more realistic and want to work for success, when Millenials live a dream, want to be discovered and are more optimists. Younger generation is creating things and accepting others  - Millenials from the other side,  tolerant others and share things.

1995 WHO ARE YOU?
Personally it’s hard for me to say that I’m Milennial or Tween. I was born in 1995, so edge of two generations. When I’m talking about them, sometimes I identify with one and then with the second. It also really depends from what country are you – Millenials would be totally diverse in e.x. U.S., Eastern Europe countries and China, as technology expand at different level among years. Moreover, characteristic of Millenials or GenZ are not definitive – it doesn’t mean that older generations as GenX or Baby Boomers can’t use the Internet at same level as GenY, but for sure they have different backround.

ALL WILL BE TWEETED, LIKED & SHARED

Social media world is dominated by Millenials and Generation Z totally. Older generations never would understand so fully new technology as those two generations. Their instant access to computers and Internet from young age and even from the day they born, made them specific kind of people. However we still can see big differences between them, we have to be sure that literally everything – from new haircut of some celebrity through funny video of dogs or  inspirational quote to elections’ results or big social campaign – will be tweeted, liked, shared, given a heart, snapped, reposted, screenshoted, saved, added to favourite, subscribed and any other actions that future social media will bring us.
